Avalanche Swiss Granola – Empowering Youth and Fueling the Future

Avalanche Adventures: Granola Growing Minds

Meet Debbie, a passionate individual who enjoys Avalanche Swiss Granola to help fuel her busy life as teacher. Avalanche allows her to focus on her profession and the lives of the youth that she works with. Empowering Youth and Fueling hunger with Avalanche Swiss Granola!

“I love teaching because I believe I am making a difference in the lives of my students. I love the feeling of seeing my students finally grasp a concept and want them to continue to make progress. Teaching is the profession that builds other professions. Teaching for the past 5 years has helped me become a lifelong learner who is highly adaptable because every day in the classroom is a new adventure!”

So you have been a teacher for 5 years- What are some of the hardest things you face?

Many of the families I work with come from low-income communities that lack resources. This often means that my students are behind academically despite strong support from their families. It also means that my students have varied experiences that affect their lives in both positive and negative ways. Bridging the gap between students’ current level and where they need to be is always difficult, but in my classroom, the gap sometimes feels wider and bridging it even more urgent. In any given classroom, there are 30 kids, which means 30 different learners, 30 different levels of resources, support, experiences, learning styles, abilities, and interests. Ensuring every child gets exactly what he or she needs to be successful is a huge challenge.

Did you always know you wanted to go into teaching?

I think I did. At a young age, when playing school or house with my siblings and cousins, I was always the teacher. I have always found myself drawn back to teaching or tutoring in some way. Though I majored in Creative Writing in college, I continued to tutor inner-city youth in math and founded an art class at a local community center during my four years. During this time, I began to view education through the lens of social justice. After I graduated, I taught English abroad in Taiwan for a year before joining Teach For America. I’ve somehow been teaching for the past 5 years. Time flies!

What grade do you currently teach?

I currently teach second grade. Throughout my experience in the classroom, I have taught kindergarten and second through sixth grade, but second grade is my favorite. Second graders are very curious. They ask a lot of (mostly relevant) questions and still get excited about learning. Teachers are still people they look up to as role models. At the same time, they are starting to become more independent. They can take more ownership of their learning and have more responsibilities in the classroom.

What is the most rewarding part about the career you have chosen?

My teachers played a big part in my success and were a huge support system for me throughout my education. As someone from a low-income background who did not necessarily have the same resources as my peers, being able to have the encouragement of my teachers truly changed the course of my life. I always felt like anything was possible, and I want that for my students as well. I want to be the person who inspires them to keep working, learning, and being persistent. I love seeing my students’ faces light up when they finally grasp a concept. There is no better feeling!

How do you use Avalanche Swiss Granola?

I keep bags of Avalanche Swiss Granola in my backpack and in my desk for on the go snacking. It helps me keep moving on those long days when I barely have time to sit down. It allows me to give my best to my students every single day.

If you weren’t teaching, what would you be doing?

I love writing, and my dream is to write a book someday. I don’t know exactly what that would look like, maybe a children’s book or possibly a novel. I’m not sure, but I think it would be a great, new adventure for me. I also love to travel, so being a travel writer or blogger while giving advice to teachers along the way would combine three of my passions.

The Truth Behind 3 Common Granola Myths

The ‘simple’ act of watching what you eat has probably never been more in the public eye as it is today, especially amidst all of the healthy lifestyle trends that are circulating the web and social media. Granola has been a longstanding part of this conversation and is a key, yet controversial food. It has continued to gain popularity over the years and more recently the granola parfait trend has become an Instagram superstar among foodies the world over and is billed as a delicious and health conscious treat.

Unfortunately there is a ton of misinformation surrounding granola and whether or not it’s as healthy as it seems. Let’s pull back the curtain on some of the most common granola myths and reveal the truth behind them.

Myth 1: All granola is healthy for you.

Although we’re all granola lovers here, it’s important to distinguish what granola is good for you versus what isn’t. There’s all sorts of granola out there filled with high sugar, sodium, and artificial color/preservatives. The key to identify which granola is the healthiest option is to look for a USDA organic, all natural, and GMO free option. It’s important to know what you’re putting in your body and that ALL ingredients are natural and real. So, no, all granola isn’t healthy for you, but real granola  made with quality ingredients like the kind we produce here at Avalanche Swiss Granola makes all the difference.

Myth 2: Granola has no nutritional value.

While it may be true that other brands of granola are buried in sugars and artificial flavors, granola itself is still a great source of protein. Swiss Granola highlights its protein by adding in other key ingredients such as nuts, fruits, and even Quinoa. These ingredients all serve to boost flavor and protein intake! Just one bag alone of Swiss Granola can land you up to 5 grams of protein, which is an excellent protein boost for breakfast (or your mid-day snack)!

Myth 3: Granola is only for a quick and on-the-go breakfast.

It’s no secret that granola is convenient and easy, especially with Avalanche Swiss Granola’s packaging. If it’s an on-the-go breakfast that you’re seeking, then Avalanche Swiss Granola is your answer. But its also perfect on a comfy Sunday morning with time to kick your feet up and savor the flavor. Throwing in some key ingredients like yogurt, fruit, honey, seeds, and oats will for sure make your meal a big one with many ingredients to fill you up even more.

Thankfully, granola can be a cornerstone part of any healthy lifestyle plan, when the ingredients are the right quality and the nutritional value is present. Between the kind of energy it provides, the portability and convenience, organic granola can keep you fueled for all the adventures that keep your body moving and ready to take on what lies ahead.

Not All Granola is Created Equal

Organic Avalanche Swiss Granola distinguishes itself, it sets a standard which is high above the rest—every step of the way. Besides delighting the taste buds, it’s healthy, ecofriendly and ready to be devoured on the go. We don’t feel you have to sacrifice taste for nutritional value or cause harm to the environment. You can feel guilt-free about Avalanche Swiss Granola on all levels!

Let’s start at the very beginning. Where and how is the granola produced?

Organic Avalanche granola was developed in partnership with one of the most forward thinking vendors in Switzerland, the “greenest” country in the world. Our amazing vendor has no carbon footprint!

We started with the highest caliber ingredients. High quality ingredients create a high quality tasting product. It’s that simple. Avalanche Swiss granola’s ingredients are organic, non-GMO, and ethically produced. We care deeply about the earth and the people who grow the ingredients for our granola. We are particularly proud of the hazelnuts, which are part of the Happy Hazelnut Project

Delicious Red Berry Avalanche Swiss GranolaOnce the ingredients were selected, master chef Hans Blume invested a significant amount of time experimenting with granola recipes, baking temperatures, and length of baking time. The end result was slow baking granola and varying the temperature. Avalanche Swiss granola is baked at FIVE different temperatures and is baked 2.5 times longer than most commercially available granola.

After perfecting the granola, we wanted to preserve the freshness and crunchiness and not use any chemical preservatives. We experimented with different packaging and settled on vacuum-packed foil barrier pouches with less than 2% oxygen after the granola is sealed within. Why is this so revolutionary? The way we pack each granola bag preserves the crunch and fresh flavor by protecting it from two food enemies: oxygen and moisture.

And then we have the finished granola, the heart of the matter. Organic Avalanche Swiss Granola is made with the highest quality ingredients, slow-baked, and packed to lock-in freshness. The perfectly crafted blend of flavors is delicious to eat on its own or combined with your favorites: ice cream, yogurt, fruits, milk, or smoothie bowl!

Avalanche Swiss Granola is for the every person. From hiking up mountains to the early mornings in the office, from rushing to the school bus to that 3pm pick me up. Granola that packs well for those long bike rides and in your beach bag. Avalanche goes where you go. Enjoy it slow or on the go, how you enjoy it and where you enjoy it is up to you. But the most important thing is, you will enjoy it.
